5 Tips to Refocus Your Training

Sometimes things happen and our training doesn't go to plan. Life throws us unexpected challenges and our routine goes out the window. Here are 5 tips that I use to refocus my training after a break.
1- Don't get annoyed, see the break as a rest day/week/weeks and then ease yourself back into a routine
2- As soon as you feel ready and rested get back into it! This is the hardest part, the first few sessions back are usually killer but don’t procrastinate. I allow myself some gentler sessions for the first few days then I increase the intensity once I’m back into my routine.
3- Once we’re rested and we’ve given our selves self-compassion and understanding for getting ill, distracted, or dealing with issues that have taken priority a bit of determination can go a long way to getting us back into our routines. Find what works for you, for me it’s a bit of tough love and good music, for you maybe it’s a work out buddy or signing into classes for the first week back. If we have a ritual that we use to get back into our training after having a break it could help reduce the length of time we find ourselves ‘falling off the wagon’ and help us maintain a consistent routine.
4- Unless you’re training for something specific don’t feel the need to over compensate because you’ve missed a week of training, just continue your routine or program and focus on getting back to a consistent routine.
5- Lastly (this one applies even if we haven't had a break!) maybe your goals need tweeked? Are they realistic? Maybe your goals are fine but your training sessions need adjusting? If you find that you’re missing training a lot because you don’t have time or you’re not motivated because you’re not getting the results you want maybe it’s time to check in and adjust your goals and your sessions to ones that suit your life right now. Setting challenging but realistic goals and expectations for ourselves and our bodies gives us more freedom and hopefully more pleasure from our exercise routine than setting unattainable and unsustainable ones.
Life is full of challenges and unexpected issues that arise, sometimes prioritising health and well being is knowing when to rest, or sometimes other things are more urgent, but if we can avoid prolonging procrastination and get into a consistent routine then we can still see the results we want and exercise and healthful living become a part of our lifestyle long term.
